Artist Highlights:

Steve Lacy

As part of a new installment to the blog, I'll be posting an artist highlight feature whenever there's an artist I want to feature for you guys. For the first installment I want to start with the ever innovative Steve Lacy- an artist who has become a regular in my playlists recently.

Steve Lacy's music style isn't necessarily easy to define, not compared to other mainstream artists. He found his fame as part of the Grammy award winning R&B group, The Internet. Steve has also found his way into the song writing and production side of music, even helping to write and produce the song Pride by Kendrick Lamar- one of the biggest names in hip hop. With a backlog like that, it's easy to see why people would at least want to listen to his solo work. Yet even his biggest fans for his song writing work and guitarist days would admit that there expectations were blown away by his solo work. Recently, one of his tracks has become so popular that it features prominently in a major trend on Tik-Tok (a popular video app like Vine). The song below appears in these short videos for it's opening which has comedic value attached to relatable situations.

Personally, I would describe his music as a modern take on funk, with his injections of hip hop and jazzy/indie vocals, that collates as a mosaic of popular east coast music across the past twenty years. The way he alternates genres seamlessly proves his ability as a producer more than anything else. It's never easy for an artist who has been attached to a popular award winning band to grow by themselves and achieve their independence in their own sounds, especially someone who was mainly just a guitarist in said band. However, Steve is multifaceted and has talents beyond most solo artists, and with that lack of reliance on other people, he thrives as an individual powerhouse. In some ways, i'm reminded of Jay Z, as he too was an artist who handled a lot of his own production and directing, whilst also traversing genres.

Steve's solo work is all on Spotify and iTunes, and any other up to date, reliable music software. It's well worth your time, and he's a very active artist, always producing new works. Follow his social medias as well, as you'll find he's quite a likable and funny personality, who also interacts with his fans a hell of a lot.
