THE Best New Album of 2019 So Far

IGOR

If you haven't yet listened to IGOR- why?

Tyler, the Creator comes back with another outstanding full length project, a while after 'Flower Boy', which in itself was a fantastic album. But none who have heard IGOR would doubt that this is Tyler's best music yet, with exceptional production quality, seamless flows between and within songs, and dreamy lyrics mixed with hard hitting verses. It's been a long time that I've been able to listen to a hip hop/R&B album from start to finish, without getting bored once, or skipping a song, yet even after many listens, I can confidently say I could listen to the whole album on repeat. The album includes many great stand alone tracks, that work well by them self as well as in the context of the album all together. However, none work better than 'Earfquake', possibly the best of 2019 so far for me, across any genre- including Old Town Road (shocking I know, blasphemy even). I'll link the song below.

The music video also exemplifies Tyler's extraordinary ability to perform and direct eccentric humour, with the opening of this video making me laugh everytime through its dead pan tone and surreal language cast in a plain setting. Tyler has often jumped between his comedy and music, but always found a way to combine both perfectly, and I shoutout a lot of comedic artists on this blog, like bbno$ and Joey Trap, but Tyler is an idol to these guys, and they likely emulate a lot of his work in their performances.

Tyler is one of those artists that understand that real music, and real talent, isn't pushed through a commercial catalyst, nor is it subject to deadlines and constant production. I, for one, am glad that Tyler takes his time and waits on projects to give it his best attention, as it gives us quality sound like this. Artists in the charts seem to push out carbon copies of the same song every other week, and don't allow their own creative identity to stand out from the rest of the artists in their niche. Tyler certainly stands out in the R&B, hip-hop, indie dreamy scene. He's hard to define, and hard to place, he's his own thing and proves it in all his work- whether that be comedy, music or directing. He proves that eccentricism can be popular on a wide level, not just targeted to a certain subsection of a musical genre.

If you have any time to listen to this guy in general, please do, but more importantly, play IGOR on repeat while you're driving, working or whatever.
